Original Broadway Cast Recording

Without the ability to watch its hard-working young cast, listening to the new cast recording of the short-lived Lysistrata Jones forces the listener to reevaluate Lewis Flinn’s repetitive music and lyrics, which are steeped in a sophomoric pop-music idiom. Not surprisingly, what sounded lame in the theater is worse on disc, and what sounded promising in the theater is mostly attributable to the talented cast. (Broadway Records)

PS Classics’ new recording of City Center Encores’ revelatory production of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s dazzling Merrily We Roll Along may be the cast recording of the year. Sumptuously produced with new orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick, this Merrily dazzles in every aspect, from its terrific liner notes and color pictures to its fantastic vocal performances by Colin Donnell, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Celia Keenan Bolger. Raissa Katona Bennett

Another Kind of Light

Raissa Katona Bennett has a lovely voice, but there is nothing so remarkable about it that would distinguish it from other, similarly talented women. What’s noteworthy about Bennett’s sophomore disc on LML, Another Kind of Light, is her ability to choose fresh and interesting material by, among others, Michele Brourman, Stephen Hoffman, Michael Mooney, Michael John LaChiusa and David Caldwell, which she sings beautifully.
